A child-centred, holistic approach

At Little Footsteps our learning programme is based on the early childhood curriculum called Te Whariki. This was developed by The New Zealand Ministry of Education. 

What is Te Whariki?

This was designed to develop confidence in children and use their abilities to experiment through their play, thus encouraging the love to learn. It harnesses creativity and discovery. 

Te Whariki is based on four principles; 

  • Empowerment: children will be empowered to learn and grow.

  • Holistic development: children learn and grow in a holistic way. Their intellectual, social, cultural, physical, emotional and spiritual learning is interwoven across all their experiences.

  • Family, whānau and community: a child’s family, whānau and community are recognised as part of the learning experience.

  • Relationships: children learn through positive relationships with people, places and things.

Within these principles are five essential areas of learning and development:
